German 311: Contemporary Germany Through Media (Grinnell College, Fall 2019)

During our discussion of refugees in Europe we spent some time thinking about the representation of Germany and refugees in the Ankommen App, a phone app designed to help integrate refugees into life in Germany. In our discussion we identified numerous biases and gaps in the information provided by the app.

As a final project students researched and wrote additional pages for the app, which we turned into a WordPress website. Please check out their wonderful work here.

German 211: Intermediate German 1 (Grinnell College, Fall 2019)

As a part of Intermediate German, my colleague and I wanted to give students the opportunity to reflect on their time learning German and the role that multilingualism plays in their lives. We asked students to work in pairs to think together about their collective experiences and create a short video reflecting on questions such as:

  • What is learning German like for you?
  • Why are you interested in the German language and cultures in the German-speaking world?
  • Are there humorous or exciting moments from your time learning German?
  • What did you learn about yourself while learning German?
